For decades, Mayurbhanj has been celebrated for its forests, tribal heritage and cultural legacy. In 2026, however, the district has become one of the focal points of Odisha’s development story.
A rare joint visit by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, a daughter of Mayurbhanj, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought unprecedented national attention to the district. During their visit to Rairangpur, development projects worth over тВ╣47,600 crore were inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid, making it one of the largest development announcements in Odisha’s recent history.
A Historic Day for Mayurbhanj

On 20 June 2026, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly visited Pahadpur and RairangpurтАФa rare occasion where both constitutional leaders travelled together to Mayurbhanj.

Among the announcements were projects spanning:
- Energy
- Industrial infrastructure
- National and state highways
- Drinking water
- Healthcare
- Tourism
- Education
- Irrigation
Together, these projects represent investments of more than тВ╣47,600 crore across Odisha, with Mayurbhanj emerging as one of the key beneficiaries.

“Pahadpur to Become a Solar Village” – PM Modi
One of the biggest announcements made during the visit was the decision to develop Pahadpur, President Murmu’s native village, as a Surya Gram (Solar Village).
The initiative aims to create a model rural settlement powered by renewable energy while improving public infrastructure, sanitation and community facilities. It could become a blueprint for sustainable development across tribal regions.

Healthcare Gets a Major Boost
Healthcare infrastructure in Mayurbhanj has seen one of its biggest upgrades in recent years.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently inaugurated 39 development projects worth over тВ╣430 crore in the district. The centrepiece was the new 650-bed Teaching Hospital at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College, Baripada, built at a cost of around тВ╣258 crore.
The hospital is expected to reduce dependence on Cuttack and Bhubaneswar for advanced medical treatment and improve healthcare access for people across northern Odisha.
Similipal Set to Benefit from Tourism Investments
With Similipal Tiger Reserve now recognised as one of India’s premier wildlife destinations, tourism infrastructure is receiving renewed attention.
Planned improvements include:
- Better road connectivity
- Visitor facilities
- Eco-tourism infrastructure
- Interpretation centres
- Sustainable tourism initiatives
Improved tourism has the potential to generate employment for local communities while preserving the ecological significance of Similipal.
Better Roads, Better Connectivity
Road infrastructure remains one of the biggest priorities for Mayurbhanj.
Several state and national highway projects announced by the Central and State Governments aim to:
- Reduce travel time across northern Odisha.
- Improve access to tribal and rural regions.
- Support industrial growth.
- Enhance tourism connectivity.
Improved logistics are expected to make Baripada and Rairangpur stronger economic centres over the coming decade.
Education and Tribal Empowerment
During their visit, the President and Prime Minister also visited the Skill Centre and Pahadpur School, highlighting the emphasis on education and skill development.
The government’s focus continues to include:
- Eklavya Model Residential Schools
- Tribal hostels
- Skill development centres
- Women’s empowerment initiatives
- Rural entrepreneurship
These investments are intended to create employment opportunities within the district instead of forcing migration to larger cities.
Why This Matters
Mayurbhanj has often been viewed as a district rich in natural resources but lacking major investment. The events of 2026 suggest that perception is beginning to change.
Large-scale public investment, improved healthcare, renewable energy, tourism development and better connectivity indicate a long-term strategy to integrate the district more closely with Odisha’s economic growth while preserving its tribal identity and ecological wealth.
If these projects are implemented effectively, Mayurbhanj could emerge over the next decade as one of eastern India’s most important centres for sustainable development.
Looking Ahead
The coming years will determine how these announcements translate into real change on the ground. Residents will be watching closely as infrastructure projects move from foundation stones to completed roads, hospitals, schools and tourism facilities.
For the people of Mayurbhanj, 2026 may well be remembered as the year the district stepped onto the national development map.
